When a trip to the island goes very wrong
5 notes (via bontempsbaker)
Even in the tropics the rain was cold, and Dave was wishing he had put a shirt on. He rubbed her arms in a poor attempt to warm her, disturbed to see her wounds. He frowned at her question, trying to think, before finally glancing down at the blade in his hand. He was willing to use it. She had to be too. There was no help coming and no getting off the island in this weather. They had no other choice but to take down the crazies themselves. Lifting a hand to her face, he kissed her hard and then told her exactly what he needed her to do.
…
His breaths came fast as he lay in wait, watching the beach and listening for any sound over the pounding rain. He was counting on the fact they knew the island better than their intruders did to help them. Finally, he heard the crack of the flare, looking up as the red light rose in the sky. He said a silent prayer of thanks to whatever God had made him buy that safety kit for the boat before looking toward the house. They had to have heard it, seen it. Eventually he saw two figures emerge. It had to be the men; one with a limp and the other he recognized as Lee even from his hiding spot. They yelled something at each other through the rain and split up. Dave watched intently as Rick took the main road down to the pier. He and Alyx had set up a line across the trees at the base of the path. Switching his attention to Lee, he lifted himself up from his spot in the brush and took chase.
Alyx leaned into David, seeking warmth from his body. She rubbed over his shoulder gently where she could see it turning purple. She was glad it hadn’t been dislocated, she’d hate to have had to try and put it back into the socket. She returned his kiss, pouring everything she felt for him into it. If things went bad…

Alyx moved through the rain to the boat, staying low and using trees for cover. She was water logged by the time she got there, counting on the storm to cover any sounds she made as she got to the boat. She frowned when she climbed on and saw the wires were ripped out of the engine. Wet hair fell over her face as she searched below the seats for the emergency kit, keeping the bat close and one eye on the path. Flaregun in hand, she jumped back to the dock and shot it into the sky. Then she was back in the trees, waiting for them.
Her breaths came fast and her eyes darted around as she heard movement in the trees. She white knuckled the bat as she saw Rick limping by, Lee close behind. She took a deep breath and let it out as she swung the bat, all her weight behind it, and struck Rick’s face. Blood flew and the sickening sound of bones breaking was heard of the rain.
It would kill him if anything happened to her. He wouldn’t let that happen. These thoughts filled Dave’s mind as he stalked Lee. He’d intercept him before he reached where Alyx was hidden. He raced near silently through the rain, ducking into the trees before Lee could spot him. They both heard it at the same time. The thud of wood against flesh and bone. Lee immediately changed direction to find the source of the sound but Dave was faster, jumping into the path, cutting him off just in time to sink the kitchen knife into his gut.
His senses sharpened and time slowed down, taking in every moment. The look of shock on Lee’s face. The sound of his own breathing loud in his ears. The sudden heat that flooded his hands. He knew it had to be blood but didn’t truly believe it until he looked down and saw the thick liquid staining his hands. A sick gurgling sound made Dave look back up at Lee, who was struggling to speak. This was the piece of shit that had tortured his wife, that would have killed her. Eyes narrowing in disgust, he felt no remorse as he drove the knife deeper before pushing him to the wet ground. In the dark, he missed the moment the life drained out of Lee. Dave reached down only to pull the bloodied knife from the body and then took off to the beach and Alyx.
Alyx watched Rick fall to the ground before raising the bat and slamming it down again. Then again. He’d planned to rape her. Kill her. Hurt her children. She wouldn’t let him get up. She brought the bat down on him over and over, tears streaming down her face as blood spattered all over her. Dimly she realized someone was screaming, but didn’t realize the sound was coming from her. Rage and terror breaking her for the moment.
Alyx dropped the bat and went quiet when she saw her husband, and stood staring over at him, silent. She let the cold rain wash over her and clean the blood from her. Sobs wracked her body as he came and wrapped his arms around her.
